The USS Cod submarine bell is rung in honor of each of the 70 crewmen who died 76 years ago on this day when they perished on the submarine USS Grunion during World War II.

A carnation is placed by each name in honor of the 70 crewmen who died on the submarine USS Grunion during World War II. As each name was read aloud, volunteers honored the lost sailors by throwing a carnation into Lake Erie and ringing the submarine's bell. The USS Grunion, a submarine identical to the USS Cod, disappeared while patrolling the Aleutian Islands in 1942.It was discovered almost 65 years later.

Phyllis Howell, of South Carolina, throws a carnation into Lake Erie in honor of her uncle William H. Cuthbertson, one of the 70 crewmen who died 76 years ago on this day on the submarine USS Grunion. Howell happened to be in Cleveland because of her husband's visit to The Cleveland Clinic.
